While this may seem like a boast, it’s the absolute truth; our camp is in an amazing location for a full view of all the stars in the Wadi Rum night sky. So, let’s do a deep dive in to Wadi Rum stargazing, what makes it so amazing, what you can expect when you stargaze with us.
An Introduction to the Wadi Rum Stars and the Night Sky of the Desert
For thousands of years, humans have looked up at the night sky and wondered. This wonder helped to define our sense of who we are, our myths and legends, our religious beliefs and a sense of our place in the wider cosmos.
Truly dark skies are becoming less and less common as the world urbanises, with places like Wadi Rum, with it’s remoteness and lack of light pollution becoming popular stargazing destinations.
The secrets that the Wadi Rum sky holds will pleasantly surprise you. On a clear night, you can see the milky way, along with thousands of stars and astronomical sights, in amazingly infinite detail, just by looking up. All you need is a pair of eyes.
The view in itself is already comfortably spellbinding, yet we make it even more accessible with our powerful Equatorial Schmidt-Cassegrain Telescope mounted in the desert, so you can absorb the scene more deeply.
What's So Good About Wadi Rum Stargazing?
To tell you the truth, Wadi Rum stargazing isn’t just a treat for the eyes, it’s an all round experience that engages the other senses too. Not sure what we mean by that? Please, allow us to explain how Wadi Rum stargazing can captivate multiple senses.
For a start, Wadi Rum is remote and the desert is sparsely populated. That means there is no light pollution to obscure your view of the night sky. You may be genuinely shocked to see how much of a difference that can actually make.
There are so many visible stars that it can sometimes be hard for the eyes to put it all in focus at once.
So that’s the visuals taken care of, but the remoteness of the desert also offers another perk. Complete silence. The kind of silence you will never experience in a city. The kind of silence that brings inner peace and allows you to focus on the stars and contemplate your place in the universe.
Given everything mentioned here, Wadi Rum is also a great for anyone who has more than a passing interest in astronomy. You probably won’t be surprised to hear that people often come here to view occasional stellar events, like meteor showers, close approaches and passing comets.
We get so excited about these astrological phenomena, so we’re happy to organise Wadi Rum stargazing for you around special cosmological events. Just contact us and we can geek out together while we organise your custom-made cosmological encounter.
Are the Wadi Rum Stars Different From Stars in Other Places?
Not to seem deliberately indecisive here, but the answer to that question is yes, and no. If you are from the southern hemisphere, there are some constellations that we can all can see, but we’ve never had the good fortune to see the Southern Cross here in Wadi Rum.
Sorry if we disappointed the entire populations of Australia and New Zealand with that information.
The good news is that in this hemisphere, we get visuals of other constellations that are not present in the southern hemisphere, which means the Wadi Rum stars are different to what you see at home. That gives you something new and exciting to look forward to.
For people in the northern hemisphere, the stars we see in Wadi Rum are essentially the same with some small regional variances, including slight positional changes. The difference is that in Wadi Rum, it’s completely dark.
The only light that will have an effect on your Wadi Rum Stargazing Experience will be the moon light. So even if our skies are relatively similar to yours, the Wadi Rum night sky offers a better viewing experience due to the lack of light pollution.
What Can I Expect from Wadi Rum Stargazing?
Quite obviously, there are going to be stars. So many stars. There’s a good chance you’ve never seen so many star in your life! You’ll be so mesmerised by them that you may be compelled to stare at them for hours.
Aside from that, your knowledgeable guide has some cool starry stories to share with you. He’ll excitedly demonstrate how nomadic Bedouins from Wadi Rum used the stars to navigate and make sure they always found their way home.
Last but not least, you can expect a peacefulness and calm you may have never felt before. There are no unnatural noises in the desert. No hum of machines or cars. No worries or stress. Just silence. A silence that allows for greater appreciation of your surroundings
We got a sky full of stars, a guide full of enthusiasm and knowledge as well as a desert full of silence. All of these things combine wonderfully with our powerful telescope to take your Wadi Rum stargazing to the next level.
Our Wadi Rum Star Gazing Equipment
Wadi Rum star gazing is cool enough with just the naked eye. However, the problem in Wadi Rum is that the sky is so calm and so clear that the sheer number of stars can actually become distracting when you’re trying to focus on certain constellations.
That’s why we have our powerful Equatorial Schmidt-Cassegrain Telescope to give you a better, more focused view. We use it to help you see consellations of interest in clear and crisp details that the naked eye might miss.
It’s our way of enhancing your experience by bringing the stars closer to you. That way you can feel like you’re among them. Perhaps that is really were we belong. As the famous astronomer, Carl Sagan, once said, “We’re all made of stardust.”
You could also count our guide as ‘equipment’, considering that his presence adds another layer of wonder to Wadi Rum stargazing. He’s the one whose knowledge and enthusiasm will take you on a delightful visual journey through the stars.
Our guide’s infinite knowledge of the Wadi Rum night sky and the stellar Bedouin traditions he willingly shares will intrigue you. Combine that with the use of our telescope and you’re sure to gain a much deeper understanding of the Wadi Rum stars than you ever thought possible.
